Polwin Morton
Bio
Pol Morton is a chronically ill non-binary artist with an unreliable body making assemblage paintings about queerness, transness, and disability. Morton’s diaristic paintings attempt to locate the self when it is trapped, whether in a bed, in the home, or even within the body. Their work takes on intimate, quotidian moments—lying in bed, taking a bath, staring out the window—and renders them larger than life. Using oil paint and collaged personal and domestic low-relief debris, such as used q-tips, curtains, and bundles of human and cat hair, they build a visceral reality that is playful, humorous, and idiosyncratic. Born in Palo Alto, California, Morton received a BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art (2009) and an MFA from Hunter College (2022). Their work has been exhibited in NYC at Trestle Gallery, Field Projects, and Shin Haus; in China at The Beijing American Center, and the Luxun Academy of Fine Art; and online at Young Space; among others.
