Bio
Nebojša Despotović takes from the collective and personal iconographic heritage by recovering old photographs and images. Newspapers clippings, books, manuals, and magazines become the starting point from which the artist creates his paintings. Despotović's research, attentive to the definition and representation of the concept of identity, only apparently saves images from the oblivion of time. Covered and altered with painting, the narrated scenes acquire an indefinite and outdated character that belongs to a remote time. In 2011 he was awarded with the prestigious residence at the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation and was selected for the 54th Venice Biennale to represent the Italian Academies at the Arsenale. He has received numerous awards and prizes. In 2012 he won the Euromobil Under 30 Award at ArteFiera in Bologna and the Mango Young Artist Award at the Swab fair in Barcelona. In 2013 he won the Premio Celeste for the experimental Raw Zone section at ArtVerona. In 2015 he won the special Art Prize at ArteFiera in Bologna and in 2016 the Rotary Prize at ArtVerona. In 2019 he was selected as a finalist at the 20th edition of the Premio Cairo at the Palazzo Reale in Milan. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in public and private spaces. In February 2014 he presented his second solo show Silent Fracture, curated by Maja Cirić, at Boccanera Gallery Trento. In May 2014 he was a guest at the Capodimonte Museum in Naples for the talk entitled Still life of Nebojša Despotović curated by Angela Tecce, Director of the Castel Sant'Elmo Museum, and Eugenio Viola, Chief Curator at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá MAMBO. In 2017 he exhibited at the Monitor Gallery in Rome with the Malutta Foundation. In May 2017 he opened his solo show in Moscow at Triangle Gallery and in September 2017 his solo show in New York at Ierimonti Gallery. In 2018 he presented his third solo show at Boccanera Gallery Trento and Milan The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea or freie Kartoffeln. In 2020 he inaugurates his solo show at the MEF Museo Ettore Fico in Turin. He lives and works between Treviso and Venice, Italy.
